From the Outside, In

For over a year, I’ve been saying hello to anyone that walks by our church meetings. And to my surprise (speaking honestly), God has been drawing people in, from such a simple interaction! One couple, who grew up in Hell’s kitchen, came in nearly a year ago, got baptized, and have been an integral part of our community since. When I step out in faith, He works! It’s amazing to see what God does when I simply put out a “Good morning, God bless you!”

Two Sundays ago, I had the privilege of meeting a man and his son as they were walking by our church on 51st street, in Hell’s Kitchen. Although our communication was difficult, as my Spanish is un poquito, I think God’s love and attention came through. I bought them a simple breakfast at the corner bodega and invited them to eat and relax in our church lounge. I could tell that both father and son were so grateful, and I think they felt so welcome and seen in our church community.

After finishing their meal, they decided to join the next upcoming service at 12 noon. Afterwards, with the help of other Spanish speakers in our church, the Dad told us that his son, Alexander, wants to be baptized. Wow! We exchanged contact information, and are setting them up to go through the One2One together. I’m blown away! I’m tearing up as I type this, thinking about this beautiful church family, and how we get to be a part of God’s incredible plan to welcome people in.

I should no longer be surprised, but it always touches me deeply when people agree and are glad to join us, for the first time, from off the street.
